On Thursday 8th June I had the honour of shooting the wedding of Mandy & Jack at Blackthorpe Barn near Bury St Edmunds.
Well, it’s not often I get to shoot the wedding of one of my best friends. It’s almost 10 years since I first met Mandy and she’s been like a little sister to me since. As a big brother I’d only want her to marry the best, so I was delighted when she told me she was marrying Jack, a genuinely lovely guy who clearly loves her dearly.
This was my first wedding at Blackthorpe Barn and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The beautiful medieval barn is huge and Mandy and Jack had certainly put there own stamp on it. I loved the bunting and the all the little details they’d come up with. The grounds also include Blackthorpe House, just a short walk from the barn. It was here that I met Mandy, mum and dad, sister Bex (also bridesmaid) and her family, and bridesmaids Sophie & Emma. It was no surprise to me to see Mandy arrive in her beloved Vernon (AKA Ford Fiesta), chauffeured by dad Geoff.
The girls had done hair and most of their make-up before they arrived so there wasn’t that to photograph. But there was still lots for me to snap as they went about whatever it is girls do. Plus there was dresses to get into, the twins to entertain, presents to open and fizz to drink. While I was with the girls Jack and the groomsmen met my second Nick at the barn.
It was huge honour to have a front row seat for the service. The couple looked amazing and the room was full of smiles and laughter as the couple became husband and wife. The registrar let me snap away to my hearts content so I was glad to capture all those happy moments.
After the service there was plenty of time to relax before the wedding breakfast. There was a great choice of drinks to choose from while mingling, some garden games to play and family photos; I’m even in the big group photograph myself. Thanks to Nick for making the perilous climb to the top of the ladder to get the shot for me!
After the meal (the best pizza I ever ate) Mandy and Jack joined me for some pictures around the grounds. By now the sun was setting and the light was perfect. We had a good wander around the grounds and found some nice spots for pictures. And then it was time for cake-cutting and the first-dance. For me it was the end of a brilliant day and it was great to see everyone enjoying the live band as I left. I did get one thing wrong though – I forget to sign the “guest book” (some really cool framed record sleeves). Maybe I can sign it when I next see you both…?
Wishing Mandy and Jack all the very best for the future as husband and wife. Thanks so much for asking to shoot your big day (did you have a choice!?). I hope you enjoy this small selection of pictures from the “best day ever”……
